Ann Olson, OTR/L

Ann received a psychology degree from Drake University and went on to study occupational therapy at St. Catherine University. She worked as an occupational therapist for over 20 years, specializing in the treatment of neurological conditions such as stroke and dementia.

Following her rehabilitation career, Ann worked as a consultant for over 100 assisted living and memory care communities, concentrating on improving the experience of residents. She founded Sweet Basil Senior Care LLC in 2022 to directly address the needs of clients living with dementia and their families.

Over the years, Ann noticed that companionship and kindness were often the most therapeutic aspects of the treatment she provided.

Approach

Ann honors the uniqueness of each client and understands the importance of individualized support when aging begins to affect quality of life and safety. She fosters honest, nonjudgmental conversations and helps families develop realistic plans that balance the needs of everyone.

When dementia is present, Ann helps clients find the "calm in the midst of the storm” by guiding them to a better understanding of the changes they see in their loved ones and offering practical solutions.

Ann recognizes that families have a deeper understanding of their loved ones and encourages collaboration. She respects the expertise of physicians, geriatric care managers, and mental health professionals and provides referrals when needed.

“Understanding someone's personality, preferences, life story, and fears empowers us to meet their needs and makes caregiving easier for everyone.”

Why “Sweet Basil”

Basil has been used for medicinal purposes by indigenous people and eastern cultures for years. As western medicine has failed to provide a cure for dementia, researchers are discovering the benefits of natural treatments, including basil

Ann may not work with basil, but she does use other age-old remedies like compassion, wisdom, and creativity.
